Role Overview: The CEO, as the senior executive of LDI, is responsible to the Board of Directors for the overall direction and management of the organization. Key responsibilities include:

  • Recommending policies and major programs to the Board
  • Supporting Board committees
  • Maintaining an efficient organizational structure
  • Executing the LDI core mission
  • Acting as the principal spokesperson at local, state, and national levels

Primary Duties:

  • Organizational and Program Leadership: The CEO is responsible for the organization’s strategic and operational management, including the delivery of a robust fellowship program and developing and leading the Leadership Development series. In partnership with the Board and staff, the CEO will identify important topics, plan and deliver programs to Fellows and Alumni, and participate as appropriate in statewide and national programs that elevate the organization’s position, its Fellows, and Alumni. The CEO leads, develops, and retains high-performing staff, Fellows, and Alumni.
  • Growth and Advancement of the Mission: The CEO drives the organization’s mission forward by aligning all initiatives with its core values, identifying growth opportunities, developing strategic plans, cultivating partnerships, securing resources, providing visionary leadership, and advocating for the organization.
  • Policy & Planning: The CEO commits to and carries out the mission of Leadership Delaware and provides administrative support for Board policy making by providing the Board with adequate information to help it reach sound decisions and establish policies. The CEO participates in the development of and implements the strategic plan and prepares the annual business plan, monitoring the quality and effectiveness of individual programs, providing the Board with data and information needed to evaluate program effectiveness, impact, and outcomes.
  • Budget & Finances: The CEO oversees the organization’s financial status, including preparing and proposing the annual budget to the Board, monitoring it, practicing sound financial controls to achieve it, and managing programs according to Board-adopted financial policies and budget guidelines.
  • Public Relations & Communications: Maintaining a strong awareness of current trends, challenges and  emerging business sectors in Delaware, the CEO promotes the work of the organization and advocates for the organization’s mission with public policymakers and the broader community statewide. The CEO serves as the principal public face and official spokesperson of the organization, uses external presence and relationships to garner new opportunities, and seeks to deploy and refine a communications strategy that creates a strong organizational brand.
  • Fundraising & Development: The CEO will formulate and execute comprehensive development strategies and the annual development plan that will ensure that sufficient funds are available to the organization, allowing it to make continuous progress towards the achievement of its mission. The CEO leads and supports the Board and staff in fundraising efforts to enhance revenue from major donors, foundations, government agencies, and corporations.
  • Board Governance: The CEO works with the Board to fulfill the organization’s mission and attends all meetings except executive sessions. The CEO communicates effectively with the Board and provides all information necessary for the Board to function properly and to make informed decisions in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Committee Work: The CEO serves as an ex officio member of all committees and ensures that committee members have the staff support and information necessary to complete the work of the committee.
  • Board Recruitment & Development: The CEO participates in the cultivation and onboarding of new Board members, develops, and sustains strong working relationships with board members, and keeps the board informed and educated about organizational activities and changes in the field in which the organization works.
  • Staff Oversight, Compensation, and Evaluation: The CEO oversees the hiring, firing, compensation, benefits, supervision, and evaluation of all staff.

Qualifications:

The CEO will be thoroughly committed to the mission and vision of Leadership Delaware. All candidates should have proven leadership, coaching, and relationship management experience and a proven track record of resource development. Specific requirements include:

  • Exemplary personal ethics, integrity, and professionalism, underscored by a track record of clear self-awareness and self-assessment.
  • Advanced degree advantageous, with meaningful years of senior management experience, with a track record of effective program delivery
  • A history of successfully generating new revenue streams and improving financial results, including active fundraising and donor relations experience
  • Strong financial management experience, including budget preparation, analysis, decision-making, and reporting.
  • Experience coaching, managing, and developing high-performing teams.
  • Previous success in establishing positive relationships with individuals and organizations of influence, including funders, partner agencies, volunteers, public officials, and business leaders.
  • Experience and skill in working with a Board of Directors
  • Strong written and verbal communication abilities
  • Strong knowledge of Delaware and the broader business and non-profit community would be considered a plus.
  • Demonstrates a proven ability to foster robust connections with key decision-makers throughout the state of Delaware and surrounding areas.
