James Maravelias President, Delaware Building Trades, Vice President, Delaware AFL-CIO
A son of a Greek immigrant and first generation American, James Maravelias serves as Business Manager for one of the largest trade Unions in Delaware - Laborers International Union of North America, Local 199, AFL-CIO.
In addition, Mr. Maravelias serves as President of the Delaware Building Trades, President of the AFL-CIO of Delaware. He is the elected Business Manager of the Laborers Local 199 and Business Manager of the Laborers’ District Council of Delaware.
A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Mr. Maravelias was employed with Sikorsky Aircraft and traveled the world as a troubleshooter and as an Electrical and Avionics Technician, including a stint working in service to United States President Ronald Reagan.
True to his heritage and entrepreneurial spirit, Jim managed an Import and Export company specializing in goods from his family native country of Greece. Mr. Maravelias played semi-professional soccer in his family homeland - and - he continues to stay involved in the Greek community as a member of AHEPA and Treasurer at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
Mr. Maravelias earned a bachelor’s degree from the National Labor College and studied at Cornell University. Jim freely gives his time to a broad array of civic, charitable endeavors including The Variety Club, United Way of Delaware, the USS John Fitzgerald Kennedy Naval Memorial Committee, New Castle County Diversity Board and the 27th District Democratic committee where he sought elected office for state representative. He resides with his wife Diane of 35 years in Caravel Farms. Together, they reside in Bear, Delaware and raised 3 daughters --- Angelique 31, Elena, 28 and Evangelia, 15. His many personal and professional accomplishments aside, Jim's top priority is being a loving husband and good father.
