Charles “Chuck” Baldwin Command Master Chief / U.S. Navy (retired)
Command Master Chief (C/MC) Baldwin has enjoyed a distinguished career in both the military and public education. He graduated from Eastridge High School, Kankakee Illinois in 1968 and immediately enlisted in the United States Navy. After completion of Basic Training in Great Lakes Illinois he was assigned to the Alfred A. Cunningham DD752 out of Long Beach California. In June of 1969 he received orders to NTSB Cat Lo Vietnam where he served one year on the rivers in IV Corps. Upon return to the USA he reported to precom duty for the USS Luce DLG7 in Newport Rhode Island where he was a plank owner.
The next assignment took him to NSA La Maddalena Sardinia, Italy. Upon mastering the Italian language and serving as an interpreter he was assigned to RTC Great Lakes Illinois as a Company Commander. Four years later he would return to La Maddalena as Second Division LPO aboard AS 16 USS Howard W. Gilmore. A 1979 assignment to NSA La Maddalena required him to attend HRM School in Millington Tenn. Master Chief attended one of the first classes at the newly stablished Senior Enlisted Academy (SEA) Class five Brown in 1982 and served as the MEPS Director for NRD Chicago until the fall of 1985. Assigned to Comsubron 22 aboard USS Orion AS18 from 85-88. Assignment to COMNAVBASE Philadelphia 88-90 followed. 1990-1993 Baldwin had the honor of serving as CMC USS Dwight D. Eisenhower CVN 69 (where he really Liked IKE) and deployed in support of OPERATION DESERT SHIELD. December 1992 he was selected to the Final Four Candidacy as MCPON 8. When the Navy discovered they were not prepared to handle a BMCM (SW) as MCPON Baldwin retired and began an amazing career in Education and continued to serve his Navy to present as an educational consultant, leader of NJROTC’s, Chair Commissioner of Veterans Affairs for the State of Delaware, and more importantly, as a CHIEF PETTY OFFICER mentor.
In July 1993, Commandant Baldwin accepted the position of Associate Naval Science Instructor with the Seaford School District where he established the first NJROTC in the State of Delaware.
He followed this achievement with the commissioning of a second unit at Christiana High School. While at Christiana, C/MC Baldwin’s unit was recognized three times as being in the top 20% of the nations NJROTC units. He received the Christina School District Citizenship Award in 1997 and was selected as Christiana Teacher of the Year in 1998.
In 2003 C/MC co-founded and established the US Navy's first all NJROTC Charter HS. It is recognized as the flagship of the Navy JROTC program and is the largest unit in the country.
CMC Baldwin received many honors during his 25-year Navy career. For his efforts during Operation Desert Shield, as Command Master Chief of the nuclear aircraft carrier, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. In 1992, he was one of four finalists for the Navy’s top enlisted post of Master Chief of the Navy. C/MC Baldwin served in Viet Nam from October 1969 to October 1970 and in the Persian Gulf from October 1991 to March 1992.
C/MC Baldwin was recently awarded the Delaware Distinguished Service Medal by the Del- aware Adjutant General and received the Tribute of the 111th United States Congress for his work in education. The Delaware Military Academy and The Charter School of Wilmington are recognized as Delaware’s only two Blue Ribbon HS for 2018.
In 2017 he authored “Carrier to Classroom” encouraging veterans to pursue careers in education. All proceeds from his book go directly to the Delaware Veterans Trust Fund.
In February 2019 Master Chief established and endowment with proceeds from his book to sup- port the Delaware Veterans Trust.
CMC Baldwin is fluent in Italian, enjoys mountain climbing (Everest Camp 4 and summiting Kilimanjaro notably), biking, and hiking. Mentoring remains a large part of his life and currently continues to mentor over 40 of his former students.
He is married to Salvatorica and they have two children, William and Antonella and five grandchildren. They reside in Wilmington, Delaware and Ala Dei Sardi, Italy.
