Gregory R. Meece, Sr. Founding Director - Newark Charter School

Since its inception, Newark Charter School has been led by School Director Gregory R. Meece. Mr. Meece has 32 years of experience working in Delaware’s schools. He began his career with Delaware Technical & Community college, followed by a 15-year term as the Director of Development at St. Mark’s High School. In 1996, he helped launch Delaware’s first charter school, The Charter School of Wilmington. This might be considered Delaware’s first “turn-around school”: a transformation of Wilmington High School. Five years later, with the support of parents, he created the Newark Charter School. Mr. Meece holds a Master of Arts degree in Communication and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from the University of Delaware. Currently, he serves as the President of the Board of Directors of the Delaware Charter Schools Network, which represents 22 Delaware charter schools and almost 10,000 families. He has served on numerous education committees and task forces including the Leadership in Education Achievement in Delaware (LEAD) Committee; appointed by Governor Minner, and the Delaware Government Performance Review, serving Governor Markell. He is a current member, DuPont Newark Community Advisory Committee and a past member of the Rohm & Haas Community Advisory Committee. He received the Commitment to Education Award from the University of Delaware in 2005. In 2011 the Delaware Charter Schools Network selected him as recipient of its highest honor, the Catalyst in Education Award. As a member of the Community Advisory Board, Mr. Meece regularly contributes opinion pieces on education to the News Journal.
