Martie Sturtevant State of Delaware

Martha Sturtevant capitalized on her four years as a Legislative Assistant for the Delaware State House of Representatives, when she ran a 2008 campaign for State Representative of the Eighth District. While working in the General Assembly, she specialized in land use and drainage resolution, constituent advocacy and worked closely with the community, attending nightly civic meetings and mediating on behalf of constituents with other county government and state agencies. A proud Military wife, Sturtevant testified before the House on HR11, urging immediate support of our troops and partnered with the USO to coordinate a statewide collection for troop care packages sent directly overseas. She was credited for inspiring the resolution.
In January 2011, Mrs. Sturtevant joined the Legislative/Policy Committee of Autism Delaware. A passion she has been building on for some time. As a mother with children of varying academic needs including Autism Spectrum Disorder & gifted, school choice and public education that meets the needs of all students is very important to Mrs. Sturtevant. Through school choice, her oldest son attends the International Baccalaureate Program at Mount Pleasant High in Wilmington, she has three children at MOT Charter in Middletown and one enrolled as a “typical” in the Appoquinimink Early Childhood Center preschool program.

Graduating in 1993, she witnessed firsthand the implementation of charter schools and the successful partnership with the Red Clay School district, which has forged her support of charter schools and their role in public education. Championing school referendums was an important introduction to state politics and education.

Sturtevant is a longtime Trustee and Secretary of the Brady Kohn Foundation, a Delaware based non-profit that promotes public umbilical cord blood banking. She is a three-time cord blood donor and is passionate about educating the public on the benefits of adult stem cell research and cord blood banking. She is a former Executive Director and graduate of The First State Series, Winning Women, Excellence in Public Service Series, and firmly believes in the unique experience women have to offer as leaders in our community. Winning Women is a leadership development program created to encourage and empower well-qualified women from diverse backgrounds to consider public service or political leadership.

Her community activism brought recognition from a community nominating committee honoring her as a runner up for the Hardest Working Person in Delaware. A native Delawarean, Sturtevant and her husband Michael, are proud to be raising their five children in Middletown where they are both active community volunteers. Sturtevant chairs corporate fundraising for the Big Ball Marathon, to assist Middletown, Odessa and Townsend individuals and families in need, and is an active member and immediate past president for MOMS Club International of Middletown, and parishioner of St. Joseph of Middletown.
