The Honorable Bryan Townsend, Esq. State Senator, 11th District, Majority Leader; Attorney, Morris James
Bryan Townsend is the unabashedly proud father of Logan (3) and Landon (1), and the tremendously lucky husband of Lilianna. If market demand is any indicator, Bryan is a talented reader of children’s bedtime stories.
Bryan also is the Majority Leader of the Delaware State Senate, where he has represented the south Newark area since 2012 and been recognized for a strong legislative work ethic. His focus has been on health care, including: solving Delaware’s primary health care crisis; protecting women’s reproductive rights; expanding insurance coverage for fertility care; and establishing adult dental care under Medicaid. Bryan also has led on: criminal justice reform (including transitioning away from cash bail, and reforming juvenile sentencing and expungement); the role of student testing in educator evaluations; driving cards for undocumented Delawareans; and clean water infrastructure. Formerly the chair of the Senate Health Committee, Bryan now is the chair of the new Senate Housing Committee and is undertaking several initiatives on housing policy. He also is a co-chair of the Healthy States National Task Force organized by The Council of State Governments, and was an inaugural recipient of the national CSG 20 Under 40 Leadership Award.
A former law clerk for the Delaware Court of Chancery, Bryan is a corporate litigator at Morris James LLP in Wilmington, where he also has served as an attorney for children in foster care and victims of domestic violence and was named a Business Litigation Rising Star by Delaware Super Lawyers from 2018-2020. The son of a retired police officer and retired public high school teacher, Bryan is a graduate of Glasgow High School, the University of Delaware, the University of Cambridge, and Yale Law School.
